Summer is almost here! Which means the kids are out of school, long days by the pool, and BBQs. The unfortunate side effect of it heating up outside?  Bugs inside!
Today we are going to share some ways to repel flies, gnats, and even fruit flies in your home. The best part is these are kid and pet friendly so no need to worry about harmful chemicals!

Hi I'm Just Jess with Honest Honey. Here I write honest reviews on products I have tried and would personally recommend to friends and family.       No one likes flies or gnats in their home. Flies can spread a variety of diseases, including salmonella, E. coli, cholera, and typhoid fever. They are also known to carry other harmful bacteria and viruses, including those that cause diarrhea, dysentery, and tuberculosis. It's important to take measures to keep flies out of your home and to practice good hygiene to avoid the spread of disease.

If you have a ton of flys in your home, I recommend doing some research to see what type of flies. Some traps/ repellents may not work well for certain types of flies below is a link that describes most types of flies you are likely to come across:

Home DIY Fly Traps

One of the best ways to remove flys and gnats from your home is making your own Fly traps. This can be done using various items in your home. The best thing about DIY traps is that it is often very budget friendly or free. It’s also usually never has harmful chemicals in it. The downside is that it can take awhile to work, and sometimes depending on the breed of fly this may not work.

Option 1: The 2 liter Bottle Trap

You can make a fly trap using a 2 liter bottle and some fruit.

First: Cut the bottle about 5 inches below the neck of the bottle using an exacto blade all the way around the bottle horizontally. Be careful with this part as the bottle isn’t easy to cut and the exacto blade may slip and cause injury.

Next: Place a piece of fruit, like Bananas or apple cut up into the bottom half of the bottle. I tend to put bits of banana as it smells stronger. Flies and gnats are also attracted to bright colors, especially yellow.

Lastly: place the top half of the bottle upside down ontop of the bottom of the bottle. Place in an area where the flies are mostly at. This will attract the flies because of the smell of the fruit and then trap flies and gnats inside the bottle.

Option 2: The Apple-cider vinegar and Soap trap

This one is simple. Find a glass and fill it with about a cup or two of apple cider vinegar then fill it with enough soap so that the bottom of the glass is covered.

This one tends to work especially if you have flies by sink drains. The flies are attracted to the smell of the vinegar and drown because they are attracted to the color of soap. I’ve found that Dawn Dish Soap and Brag Organic Apple Cider Vinegar With Mother work the best. I noticed it works best for gnats.

Fly Repellents and traps that work well without Harmful Chemicals

These are the products I use most and keep under my kitchen sink just incase. They are safe to use around pets and kids, but do keep them out of reach of pets and kids. I mention these because these are products I have been really impressed with. They do a fantastic job of keeping flies and gnats away.

This one works by using mostly essential oils to kill and repel flies. It smells okay too. And the best part it is safe to use around pets and kids. I use this one the most, simply because it smells good and it kills bugs on sight instantly.

I use this as a back up to the spray. It catches the flies and gnats if I miss any with spray. The flies are attracted to the tape and then get stuck. It’s very simple to use however it’s very sticky. Simply pull the red string at the top to pull the sticky tape out and then hang it up where most of the flies are using the tack provided.

These are all methods I have tried that have worked.

Until next time busy bees!
